    The Effects of Metaphylaxis and Milk Replacer Additives on Health and Growth of Neonatal Holstein Bull Calves

    A study evaluating the effects of metaphylaxis antibiotics and milk replacer additives on the health and development of Holstein bull calves (n=52; mean body weight=42.28 kg + 3 kg; starting age <3 days) was conducted. The calves were placed into a completely random 3 x 4 factorial design with each group receiving either tilmicosin phosphate (TIL), ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CEF), or saline solution (CON) injected subcutaneously into the neck area. For the duration of the study, the calves also received a commercial milk replacer powder (22% Crude Protein / 20% Crude Fat) fed at 1.1% BW. Within metaphylaxis treatment, calves were randomly assigned to receive either: 1) 4 g/d for 7 d and then 2 g/d for 14 d of an egg-based probiotic (PR); 2) 2 g/d of 96% betaine (BE); 3) both PR and BE (BP); or 4) no additives . The calves were housed in individual fiberglass hutches with commercial calf starter and water provided ad libitum. The body weight of each calf was recorded twice weekly in addition to daily recordings of fecal scores (1 = firm to 4 = watery) for 54 days. Medical treatments provided to each calf for scours, respiratory distress, or febrile events were recorded daily. The cumulative response of these incidences were analyzed and used as an index of morbidity. None of the additive effects were significant for any of the measured variables. The use of metaphylaxis did not significantly affect the average daily gain (P>0.60) as the average daily gain was ~ 0.45 kg. However, when examining fecal scores, CEF and TIL significantly reduced the average fecal score over the control ((1.85 vs. 1.97 vs. 2.20 respectively) (P<0.01)). The incidences of neither fever nor respiratory issues (P>0.20) were influenced dramatically by metaphylaxis. Overall, the average treatments for fever was only 0.66 events and 0.39 events for respiratory distress for all calves. Metaphylaxis did not influence the occurrence of scours (fecal score >2) (P>0.87). Other than fecal score, these results indicate the use of metaphylaxis did not enhance productivity or reduce morbidity of Holstein neonatal bull calves

    Innovative Education in Agroecology: Experiential Learning for a Sustainable Agriculture

    The transdisciplinary field of agroecology provides a platform for experiential learning based on an expanded vision of research on sustainable farming and food systems and the application of results in creating effective learning landscapes for students. With increased recognition of limitations of fossil fuels, fresh water, and available farmland, educators are changing focus from strategies to reach maximum yields to those that feature resource use efficiency and resilience of production systems in a less benign climate. To help students deal with complexity and uncertainty and a wide range of biological and social dimensions of the food challenge, a whole-systems approach that involves life-cycle analysis and consideration of long-term impacts of systems is essential. Seven educational case studies in the Nordic Region and the U.S. Midwest demonstrate how educators can incorporate theory of the ecology of food systems with the action learning component needed to develop student potentials to create responsible change in society. New roles of agroecology instructors and students are described as they pursue a co-learning strategy to develop and apply technology to assure the productivity and security of future food system

    Fire-induced structural failure: the World Trade Center, New York

    Fire investigation has generally concentrated on determination of the cause and origin of a fire. Methodologies developed for this purpose have thus focused on the dynamics of fire growth and investigation of its effect on different objects within the structure affected by the fire. It is unusual to see a fire investigation emphasising structural damage as a way to obtain information for fire reconstruction. The series of dramatic fire events that occurred on 11 September 2001 within the World Trade Center, New York complex have emphasised the need to introduce structural analysis as a companion to evaluation of a fire timeline. Only a combined analysis is capable of providing a complete reconstruction of the event and therefore a solid determination of causality. This paper presents a methodology to establish, by means of modern structural and fire analysis tools, the sequence of events leading to a structural failure. This analysis will be compared with classic cause and origin techniques, emphasising the importance of a comprehensive study. Specific structural features and fire conditions that lead to unique forms of failure will be discussed, establishing the complexity of linking fire, structure characteristics and failure mode.     Characteristics of Academic Anesthesiologist’s Elected to an Institutional Academy of Master Educators

    Background. The educational experience and success of academic anesthesiologists may be elusive to quantify. We wished to examine the characteristics of a cohort of anesthesiology faculty who were inducted into a medical school master educator academy over the last decade. Methods. After IRB approval with waiver of consent, all 10 anesthesiology faculty inductees into the academy supplied relevant data for their accomplishments at the time of induction in multiple educational domains, including teaching and assessment, mentoring and advising, evidence of scholarship and production of enduring materials, and educational leadership. These were deidentified and analyzed. Results. The cohort had evidence of a consistent, visible footprint in the department, medical school, affiliated associations and state and national professional organizations. These included educational leadership positions, numerous teaching recognition and awards, substantial committee service, active mentorship exceeding usual faculty effort and robust portfolios of publications and presentations related to teaching and/or incorporating and supporting mentees as co-authors. Neither time in rank or academic progress was a limitation with several achieving induction in \u3c 5 years. Conclusions. It is possible for full-time anesthesiology clinicians to achieve success in educational recognition within the medical school body. This summary of characteristics of one department’s cohort may be useful to others seeking such recognition and serve. Based on the aggregate findings, we make recommendations for faculty wishing to pursue excellence in education

    Application of unsupervised chemometric analysis and self-organising feature map (SOFM) for the classification of lighter fuels

    A variety of lighter fuel samples from different manufacturers (both unevaporated and evaporated) were analysed using conventional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. In total 51 characteristic peaks were selected as variables and subjected to data pre-processing prior to subsequent analysis using unsupervised chemometric analysis (PCA and HCA) and a SOFM artificial neural network. The results obtained revealed that SOFM acted as a powerful means of evaluating and linking degraded ignitable liquid sample data to their parent unevaporated liquids

    Climate change challenges, plant science solutions

    Climate change is a defining challenge of the 21st century, and this decade is a critical time for action to mitigate the worst effects on human populations and ecosystems. Plant science can play an important role in developing crops with enhanced resilience to harsh conditions (e.g. heat, drought, salt stress, flooding, disease outbreaks) and engineering efficient carbon-capturing and carbon-sequestering plants. Here, we present examples of research being conducted in these areas and discuss challenges and open questions as a call to action for the plant science community
